According to Teemu Roos, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, spectacular predictions about artificial intelligence are often due to the fact that it is easy to downplay the work done by other people.
The hype around artificial intelligence shows no sign of abating.
Ever since the machine learning-based ChatGPT app was launched in November 2022, the news has been full of promises that AI will soon revolutionise both leisure and work.
For example, Mo Gawdat, an AI expert who has visited Finland, told Yle at the end of September that AI will overtake human intelligence in the next few years.
Famous scientists have long been making crazy predictions about artificial intelligence, like something straight out of a science fiction movie.
According to Teemu Roos , Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, images of artificial intelligence from science fiction films and books interfere with teaching and application.
– Companies create hype and warn how development is so dangerous that it should be stopped. This is a burden when trying to make more down-to-earth technology,” says Roos.
The following three examples of predictions that went wrong in the recent past show how reality sometimes gets lost in the hype.
